Whangarei is the largest populated area in Northland. Whangarei is the northernmost city in New Zealand, and the regional capital of Northland Region. The population was estimated to be 52,200 at the June 2011 estimate. The city is situated at the head of the Whangarei harbour where it is joined by the Hātea River. The 'Town Basin’ is situated on the Hātea River, which was the original port.
